The accident may have happened a long time ago but to me that late fall day in 1990 will always be too real. My grandparents were driving to see a friend on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. There was not a cloud in the sky as the bright sun warmed up a cold day in November. They had just gotten off the highway and were in the turning lane ready to take a left towards their friend's home. Little did they know that barreling down the road directly in front of them at a high rate of speed was an intoxicated, impatient man behind the wheel of a van. Sit back and think about it for a second, drunk on an early Sunday afternoon in a van full of his family. His son and daughter were in the back seat, unaware of their father's carelessness.
Back in my grandparent's car, the green arrow had given them the ok to continue towards their destination. Across the street the drunk man noticed a truck and a red light were all that stood in his way from speeding along. He decided to wait for neither. Once he reached the truck, he swerved around with such wreckless abandon, its a surprise he kept the vehicle on all four wheels.
To this day, my family and I can only hope that neither our grandmother nor grandfather saw the van coming before it smashed into the passenger side of the car. The impact had such tremendous force, their car was pushed all the way back and into a telephone pole.
What did a drunk driver do to my family? My grandfather suffered head trauma which resulted in some memory loss. He had a difficult time remembering recent events but could still recollect the past before the accident. For 5 more years my grandfather lived on but it was easy to see he was just not the same after his wife had passed away in the accident.
After the car wreck, my grandmother was transported to the hospital where she was pronounced brain dead. Her heart, which symbolizes the warm person she was, kept beating strong. Early the next morning she passed away and my family had lost her less than a week before Thanksgiving. For as long as I live, I will never forget the frantic call my mom made to her sister immediately after she found out about the accident. Despite my young age, the memories from that day will always stay with me.
If we can save one person from the grief my family has endured, our mission would become a success. Help us stop some people from driving drunk by either having our team build a beautiful DVD for you or simply by donating directly to MADD.
